Last week we were given two choices for the Concession Stand Scorecard. Go watch Bad Boys: Ride or Die, or go see The Watchers. Like true punk rockers, we looked at each other and simultaneously said “Option C” and we went and saw both movies, now we are bringing you a scorecard for both (check out what we wrote for Bad Boys: Ride or Die Here).
Here’s what we have for you on this fine hump day:
Concession Stand Scorecard: The Watchers
New Pod Drop: Eric & Josh relive the glory days when Movie Pass was a thing.
This week’s bonus movie - “The Watchers”
Letterboxd Description:
LET THEM SEE YOU.
When 28-year-old artist Mina finds shelter after getting stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers that are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.
Best Watched With
Shyamalan Stans, people who don't jump scare too easily (Josh lost count around 10 jump scares in), and fans of ancient Irish folklore.
End credit thoughts
This is the directorial debut of Ishana Night Shyamalan - M Night Shyamalan (of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs fame)’s daughter. Perhaps more importantly, she is only twenty-four years old.
The Watchers has all the ingredients for a great Shyamalan movie recipe: a world within a world that operates according to its own laws and reason, which are slowly revealed scene by scene. And of course, a major plot twist that is the key to unlocking the answers to the overarching story.
The idea of using ancient Irish folklore to examine modern-day human issues is fascinating (always being watched, always performing). It is clear from the concept, the visuals and ambition of this movie that Ishana has real filmmaking chops.
But just because you have all the right ingredients, it doesn’t mean you’re going to nail the recipe. Each of the four main characters have moments of spark onscreen, but the performances were overall lackluster–they didn’t move us to fright and we never felt that “chilled to the bones” feeling you look for in a great horror movie.
The elements are all there, so we are not writing Ishana off just because this one didn’t land for us. Not everyone is a fan of the Shyamalan movies, but the Shyamalan filmmakers deserve all the respect.
Wait to stream this one at home.
